The once-plentiful kelp forests of Puget Sound have seen a steep decline in recent decades, although there has been a surprising resurgence in some areas. To better understand what’s happening beneath the surface, the Port of Seattle is partnering with the Seattle Aquarium. They’re using an underwater drone, also known as ROV Nerio, to take a closer look. Researchers hope more detailed study will help them better understand how to conserve, protect, and restore vital kelp forests across Puget Sound. Producer Pete Cassam explains.
