Bioswales offer natural defense against urban runoff

Across Seattle, as natural spaces are paved over to become parking lots or roadways, it leads to runoff tainted with motor oil and other contaminants. But before all that pollution flows into storm drains, it can be filtered with the use of bioswales. A bioswale is a meandering channel filled with vegetation, mulch, and rocks that help reduce pollutants, silt, and debris. Seattle Public Utilities is partnering with private developers to create bioswales as a natural way to reduce stormwater pollution. Producer Randy Eng explains.
