Derrick Wheeler-Smith is sworn in as director of the Seattle Office for Civil Rights (SOCR). His appointment was confirmed by the Seattle City Council in April 2023. Director Wheeler-Smith has worked on racial equity and community empowerment in Seattle and King County for more than two decades.

The Seattle Office for Civil Rights (SOCR) works to advance civil rights and end barriers to equity; enforce laws against illegal discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and contracting within Seattle city limits; and lead the Race and Social Justice Initiative, a citywide effort to end institutional racism in City government and to achieve racial equity across our community.
