Raised in multiracial Hawaiʻi, she came from a working-class family and public schools at a time when few expected someone like her to lead a newsroom. But a remarkable path — including a year representing the country as Miss Teenage America — helped propel her into a career that broke barriers and changed who viewers saw delivering the news. Today, Matsukawa continues to champion civic engagement, representation, and the next generation of storytellers.
