City Inside/Out investigates unreinforced masonry buildings
City Inside/Out: Quake Quandary
11/17/201728:48

The city of Seattle has flagged more than 1,000 older buildings with unreinforced masonry, putting the structures at risk of collapsing during a major earthquake. Should property owners be required to retrofit these buildings? Who should pay the estimated $1 billion price tag for seismic upgrades? While preparing for the next Big One, can the city preserve its historical structures and prevent rent increases to cover the cost of retrofits?
