The Black Heritage Society of Washington State, Inc. first met in 1977 with a mission to preserve, collect and share the history of African Americans in Washington State. Founding members Donald Mumford, Esther Mumford, Jacqueline E. A. Lawson and Mary Henry share their recollections for establishing BHS, and their passion for regional history that created the mission that inspires today's vision.
