Jenifer Chao is sworn in as director of the Department of Neighborhoods. Director Chao was nominated by Mayor Bruce Harrell in February, 2023. Jenifer was raised in the Central District and Beacon Hill and now lives in South Seattle. A graduate of the University of Washington, Jenifer has more than 23 years of experience in public service. Prior to joining the City of Seattle in 2009, Jenifer worked in the non-profit sector and as a small business owner. Before accepting this post, Chao served as Deputy Director of Strategy and Administration in the City of Seattle’s Finance and Administrative Services. 

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods provides resources and opportunities for community members to build strong communities and improve their quality of life through programs and services that meet people where they are and help neighbors develop a stronger sense of place, build closer ties, and engage with their community and city government.
