Mayor Harrell joins the Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects, Alliance for Pioneer Square, and community members for a ceremonial groundbreaking to celebrate the start of construction for the Pioneer Square East-West Pedestrian Improvements project. As part of the City's Waterfront Seattle Program, and Downtown Activation Plan, the project will create seamless connections between the heart of the Pioneer Square neighborhood and the new Waterfront Park—significantly improving pedestrian accessibility and travel throughout downtown. Improvements to calm vehicle traffic and increase pedestrian travel by walking or rolling will be made to S King, S Main and S Washington streets, and Yesler Way. Additionally, the project will widen and upgrade sidewalks, move vehicles away from vulnerable underground areaways, add greenery with native plants, while maintaining loading zones for neighborhood businesses. 

This project is a part of the new world class Waterfront Park that will be opening in its entirety in 2025. The Pioneer Square East-West Pedestrian Improvements project is the latest of a series of improvement projects underway including the Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge, Railroad Way, Pike Pine streetscape and bicycle improvements, Overlook Walk, and the Park Promenade, Protected Bike Path and public restroom. Together, these projects will create a 20-acre linear park along the waterfront that extends from the stadiums  to Belltown and extends to the east connecting the waterfront into rich cultural downtown neighborhoods and the downtown core.
