The John Lewis Memorial Bridge opens, linking Northgate & Licton Springs
Grand Opening of the John Lewis Memorial Bridge
10/2/202144:11

City of Seattle officials, alongside transportation and community partners, celebrate the opening of the John Lewis Memorial Bridge (Northgate Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge). The bridge improves access to communities, services, and opportunities on the east and west sides of Interstate 5 (I-5) in Northgate and Licton Springs, helping knit together a historically divided community. It will also improve access to regional transit at the King County Transit Center and Sound Transit's new Link light rail station.

The John Lewis Memorial Bridge was made possible by the voter-approved Levy to Move Seattle, Sound Transit, Washington State Department of Transportation, and North Seattle College.

Sound Transit's Northgate Link opens on October 2, with three new stations at U District, Roosevelt and Northgate. The milestone will kick off a series of upcoming light rail openings to Tacoma's Hilltop, the Eastside, Lynnwood, Federal Way and Downtown Redmond that by 2024 will nearly triple the length of the region's light rail system from 22 to 62 miles. The Northgate extension will offer riders reliable, traffic-free trips of only 14 minutes between Northgate and downtown Seattle.

Speakers and attendees include:
Mayor Jenny A. Durkan, City of Seattle
Councilmember Debora Juarez, City of Seattle
Peter Rogoff, Sound Transit
Sam Zimbabwe, Seattle Dept. of Transportation
Sharon Nyree Williams, Storyteller
Dr. Chemene Crawford, North Seattle College
State Rep. Gerry Pollet, D-46th District
Roger Millar, Washington State Dept. of Transportation
Larry Gossett, Former King County Councilmember
Lee Lambert, Cascade Bicycle Club
