CityStream: The Fight to Save Seattle's National Archives
CityStream: The Fight to Save Seattle's National Archives
2/25/20206:25

For more than 50 years it's been a valuable resource to historians, genealogists, and ordinary folks searching for information. But to one group, Native Americans, the Seattle branch of the National Archives has special significance. So, it came as a shock when the federal government revealed it had targeted the Sand Point facility for closure. The specter of its shutdown and millions of records moved to California led to outrage and action. All eight U.S. Senators from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska have joined tribal leaders from across the Northwest demanding the government rethink its decision. Feliks Banel was the first to report this story. He explains why the fight to save this Seattle treasure has touched a nerve.
