The nonprofit Sail Sand Point will soon begin a gradual reopening by offering limited boat rentals and some sailing courses. One course, exclusively for teenage girls, teaches the finer points of sailing along with plenty of STEM instruction. The combination of learning to navigate a sailboat plus math and physics lessons bolsters young women's self-esteem and helps them feel empowered. As Nicole Sanchez explains, these are benefits that last long after the sails come down.
