City Inside/Out: Affordable Housing
4/18/201428:20

How affordable is it to live in Seattle? Nearly one fifth of the city`s homeowners are underwater with loan balances exceeding the value of their homes, and the City Council is considering drastic measures to help distressed homeowners. Meanwhile, more than half of Seattle households rent their homes, with many struggling to keep up with rapidly rising rents. Is the city doing enough to ensure its residents can continue to live here? Is the housing levy making a dent? What`s the banking industry`s response to the uptick in evictions and foreclosures in some neighborhoods? Our studio panel includes Sally Clark, chair of the Seattle City Council`s Committee on Housing Affordability, Human Services and Economic Resiliency; Lynne Garton, vice-president of the Seattle Mortgage Bankers Association; and Jonathan Grant, executive director of the Tenants Union of Washington State.
