Town Square: The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition 6/30/2009 The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition dominated local activities in the summer of 1909. It is said to have put Seattle on the national map and thrust the city into a period of economic growth and stability. That may be true, but there is no doubt that the A-Y-P celebrated the brief period of phenomenal growth following the 1897 discovery of gold in the Yukon when Seattle's population exploded. Although touted as being forward looking where earlier expositions were not, architecturally the primary buildings of the A-Y-P borrowed the vocabulary of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the Renaissance Revival taste favored by its Eastern designers. This talk scrutinizes local perceptions of the A-Y-P and the fairs impact on social, political, aesthetic and economic matters in Seattle and Washington State in 1909 and in the years that followed. |

Town Square: Bonnie Beers: Strength and Stamina: Women in the Seattle Fire Department 3/24/2009 In honor of Women's History Month, and sponsored in part by the Washington Women's History Consortium, the Seattle Municipal Archives presents "Bonnie Beers: Strength and Stamina: Women in the Seattle Fire Department". In 1975, the Seattle Fire Department broke with tradition and recruited women specifically to apply as firefighters. Six out of the 125 women were admitted to the class in 1976; of these, five resigned and the sixth was dismissed. The following year, three of these women tried again and ultimately only one, Bonnie Beers, went on to complete training and begin her six-month probation as a firefighter in January 1978. Beers retired last year after 30 years of service. |

Town Square: Shining a Light on Reporters and the Law 8/15/2008 Washington State recently passed a reporter shield law, proposed and supported by State Attorney General Rob McKenna. This program will open with a discussion of the new Washington law, and then move on to a discussion of pending Federal legislation. The Free Flow of Information Act (H.R. 2102) passed the U.S. House of Representatives last fall. The U.S. Senate version (S. 2035) recently passed the Judiciary Committee, and currently awaits further action. In addition to a moderated panel discussion among leading experts in government and law, reporters and news media executives will have a chance to explain what effects the new state law and pending federal legislation have on their industry. |

Town Square: Fort Lawton Tribute 7/26/2008 On August 14, 1944, an Italian prisoner of war named Guglielmo Olivotto was lynched at Seattle’s Fort Lawton. The murder followed a violent nighttime confrontation resulting in 43 African-American soldiers charged with rioting; three charged with first-degree murder. After worldwide publicity and the longest and largest Army court-martial of World War II, 28 were convicted of rioting and 2 were additionally found guilty of manslaughter. It remains the only criminal trial in U.S. history where black men were found guilty of lynching. On October 26, 2007, the U.S. Army’s highest court of appeal declared that the Fort Lawton court-martial had been “fundamentally unfair,” paving the way for the reversal of all 28 convictions. |

Town Square: Death with Dignity or Assisted Suicide? 7/2/2008 Oregon is currently the only state in the nation that allows assisted suicide or patient-directed dying. Former Governor Booth Gardner has filed an initiative here in Washington which, if passed, would allow some terminally ill patients to receive medication to end their lives. What are the moral and ethical arguments on both sides of this emotionally charged issue? How are they addressed in the proposed law? Medical professionals and ethicists discuss the ramifications of the issue, and take questions from the audience. The program is moderated by Seattle University Law Professor John Mitchell. Town Square: The UW and the Black Panther Party 6/27/2008 During the height of the Civil Rights movement, from 1967 to 1973, photographer Stephen Shames had unprecedented access to the Black Panther Party and captured not only its public face but also unscripted behind-the-scenes moments. Shames’s work offers an uncommonly nuanced portrait of this dynamic social movement, during one of the most tumultuous periods in U.S. history. An exhibit is on view at Odegaard Library to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the student takeover of the administration building at the University of Washington. Town Square - Science 2.0: Chris Mooney and Matthew Nisbet 10/5/2007 Journalist Chris Mooney and communication professor Matthew Nisbet explain how scientists and their allies can reframe old debates in new ways, remaining true to the science but taking advantage of a fragmented media environment to connect with a broader American public. Drawing on case studies from the battles over stem cell research, evolution, global warming, hurricanes, and other subjects, a key point of emphasis will be that scientists must adopt a language that emphasizes shared values and has broad appeal, avoiding the mistake of talking down to fellow citizens or attacking their religious beliefs. |

Town Square: Transracial Adoption of Black Children 10/11/2007 Which Way Seattle? is an ongoing series of civic dialogues about local and political affairs that directly impact Seattle's African-American community. Explore the issue of transracial adoption of Black children. Since the Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994, there has been a rise in the adoption of Black children by non-black individuals. The high proportion of black children in foster care coupled with the institutional barriers hindering Black families from adopting complicate the matters of transracial adoption and impact many. Join moderator Zynovia Hetherington, Program Director - Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program UW for a panel discussion. This event was held at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre/Center UW. |
