The Next 50 Celebration, marking the original fair`s birthday and looking forward to Seattle in 2062, has been underway since April, and wraps up next month. For September, the Next 50 theme is "Commerce and Innovation"--which is something that, here in Seattle, goes back quite a bit further than 1962. Feliks Banel explains.

New rooftop P-Patch opens at Seattle Center 6/2/2012
Community volunteers, along with Mayor Mike McGinn and Councilmembers Sally Bagshaw and Jean Godden, celebrated the opening of the first rooftop P-Patch community garden at a ceremony today on the roof of a city parking garage. Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and Seattle Center staff joined the festivities on the top level of the Mercer Garage at Seattle Center. Named the UpGarden P-Patch Community Garden by neighborhood volunteers, this P-Patch is the country`s first large-scale rooftop community garden and the first municipal rooftop community garden fully accessible to the public.

Seattle filmmaker B.J. Bullert turned her camera on the iconic Space Needle in honor of its 40th birthday in 2002. The Needle, with its distinctive architecture and ubiquitous presence on photos, films, souvenirs and other representations of Seattle, remains a major tourist draw more than four decades after the 1962 World's Fair for which it was constructed.
