Mayor`s Media Availability: 2013 Library Levy Funds 11/26/2012
In 2013, levy funds will allow the library to purchase an additional 26,000 books and other media for our children`s collections. Former Mayor Mike McGinn joined community members and City Librarian Marcellus Turner at the Ballard Library to thank the voters of Seattle for their passage of the Library Levy and provide an overview of the new items and services the new levy makes available to the public in 2013.

Seattle voters will decide on August 7 whether to support a new $123 million levy to save our public libraries. The beloved system is facing a fifth year of budget cuts in 2013, and if the levy fails, five branches will have to close. But will property owners support this seven-year tax increase? And how will levy funding be spent? We hear from library patrons and branch regional manager Wei Cai, plus Richard Conlin weighs in as Council chair of the library levy. Press Conference: Libraries for All 9/12/2008
The Seattle Public Library recently completed a 10-year, $290 million capital building program called "Libraries for All." On Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, the Library held a press conference to release a community report (available at www.spl.org) detailing the results of Libraries for All, which included the construction of the spectacular Central Library, the building of four new libraries in communities without Library service and the replacement, expansion or renovation of 22 existing branches. The report also revealed how Libraries for All spurred innovation in technology, sustainability and programming. The press conference features Library Interim Chief Executive Marilynne Gardner, former City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs, Former Mayor Greg Nickels, Central Library co-architect Joshua Prince-Ramus, Library Board member Gilbert W. Anderson and Library Board President Eric Liu.

Seattle Poet Populist "Candidates Read Off" 2006 7/16/2006
Seven Seattle poets have been nominated by the city's literary community, but only one will become the 2006-2007 Seattle Poet Populist. This year's seven nominated poets (and their nominators) are Anna Maria Hong by Eleventh Hour Productions, Lynn Coffin by PEN Washington, John Burgess by the Washington Poets Association, Joannie Kervran Stangeland by Rose Alley Press, Jourdan Keith by from the ground up reading series at Richard Hugo House, Barbara Petite by the Cancer Lifeline Reading Series at Third Place Ravenna Books, and Crysta Casey by It's About time Writers Reading Series, also at Ravenna Third Place Books.

In the eighth year of the series - "Seattle Reads" - The Seattle Public Library has selected "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" (Pantheon Books, 2003) by Marjane Satrapi. Seattle Public Library Presents: Shirin Ebadi 5/12/2006
Winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, Shirin Ebadi reads from her new memoir, Iran Awakening. A law school graduate of Tehran University, Ebadi was the first female judge in her country, serving as president of The Tehran city court from 1975. With the advent of the Islamic republic in 1979, she was forced to resign. She went on to establish a law practice defending intellectuals, the rights of women and children and refugees. With Islam as her starting point, Ebadi is known for promoting peaceful, democratic solutions to serious problems.

Seattle City Council President Nick Licata and the Seattle Public Library present: "Music and Poetry: Seattle Poet Populist Pesha Joyce Gertler and Friends." Gertler, Seattle's official Poet Populist for 2005-2006, will read her poetry, accompanied by hand drums and a flute. "Pesha sets the standard for Poet Populists to come" said Licata, who launched the program in 1999. "Her readings touch a lot of people who may never have been exposed to poetry - and that's the goal of a poet populist."
