A conversation with Legally Blonde songwriter Laurence O`Keefe and producer Hal Luftig, gives the inside story of creating this hit Broadway musical based on the popular film. O`Keefe will play and sing excerpts from his musicals (including the cult favorite Bat Boy) and Luftig will share experiences of his 20-year career as the producer of Broadway hits such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, Movin` Out, the current revival of "Oh, My God You Guys!", and the current Broadway revival of West Side Story and the upcoming Catch Me If You Can, which had its world premiere at The 5th Avenue last summer.

"Some Enchanted Evening" The Rebirth of a Classic Musical. Executive Producer and Artistic Director, David Armstrong, talks with Bartlett Sher, the outbound Artistic Director of Seattle`s Intiman Theatre and Resident Director at Lincoln Center Theatre, of how he and his team made a classic come alive for a new generation, concluding with a look at the career of South Pacific`s creators, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who revolutionized the American Musical by creating what they called "the musical play." Director Bartlett Sher`s smash-hit Tony Award-winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein`s South Pacific brought spectacular new life to a musical that hadn`t been revived on Broadway since its original production in 1949. The 5th Avenue Theatre`s Producing Artistic Director David Armstrong will tell the story of this legendary team, from their early shows with other collaborators to their historic partnership, their timeless shows and their enduring effect on the musical theater. Featuring musical performances by some of Seattle`s finest singers including Patti Cohenour, Jessica Skerrit and Eric Ankrim performing selections from Oklahoma!, Carousel, Flower Drum Song, Cinderella, The King and I and The Sound of Music.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate 9/29/2009
In this year of the Lincoln Bicentennial, Intiman Theatre and Town Hall Seattle's Center for Civic Life co-present a dramatic reading of selections from the Lincoln-Douglas debates, convened during the 1858 Illinois senatorial campaign. Lincoln, the Republican challenger, was a little-known upstart taking on a political giant. His oratorical brilliance and passionate support of racial equality helped make him an American hero. As part of Intiman's American Cycle series and its production of Robert E. Sherwood's play Abe Lincoln in Illinois, actors Erik Lochtefeld and R. Hamilton Wright read the words of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, the characters they will play in the Intiman production.

The 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards is a Tony Awards-style show was created to honor the work, talent and commitment that students devote to their school's yearly musical productions. Each year, the 5th Avenue Theatre's adjudicators visit high schools around Washington State to view their musical productions. Nominations are made in a variety of categories, including overall musical production, lead actors, supporting actors, chorus, ensemble group, direction, music direction, choreography, orchestra, design, stage crew, lobby display, and program design. Each award recipient is invited to give an acceptance speech. In addition, nominees for Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Male Actor and Outstanding Female Actor perform on The 5th Avenue Theatre's beautiful stage.

In its 11th year, 14/48 is Seattle's beloved theater marathon. Twice a year, it boasts 14 plays conceived, written, designed, scored, rehearsed and performed in 48 hours, thus its official nickname - "the world's quickest theater festival." The Mayor's Arts Awards recognize the contributions made by artists, arts and cultural organizations and community members who make a difference through arts and cultural activities. To reflect the diversity of artistic achievement throughout the city, the awards do not have set categories.

Emilio de Cavalieri wrote his sacred opera "The Play of the Soul and the Body" in 1600. As a young man he had grown up in Rome at the time that Michelangelo was painting the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel. He created a sacred musical drama depicting the same events: the trumpets of judgment day blaring as the blessed souls make their way to their heavenly reward and the damned are sent to their eternal punishment. This work was recreated by the Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera in November 2007 at St. James Cathedral under the musical direction of Stephen Stubbs and the stage direction and choreography of Anna Mansbridge.

Known mostly for his shows about strong women like HELLO DOLLY and MAME, Herman also wrote the score to La CAGE, MACK and MABEL, DEAR WORLD, and MILK and HONEY. Herman's early interest in theater and ability to play anything on the piano without formal lessons led to a long history on Broadway. Also starring John Maynard as the Squid-Lord and Seattle Times restaurant critic and KPLU food commentator, Nancy Leson as glamorous gal about town Nancy Gleason. Other KPLU personalities featured in the show include Robin Lloyd, Nick Morrison, Gary Davis, Liam Moriarty, and Katherine Banwell. Michael Stein joins the cast as the announcer. West Side Story at the 5th Avenue and SPD Project 5/25/2007
A collaboration between the 5th Avenue Theatre and the Seattle Police Department, the WEST SIDE STORY PROJECT used gang issues from the 50th anniversary production to educate today's youth. Over the course of three months, teens attended youth summits and worked with Seattle Police officers in role reversal situations to learn more about each other. WEST SIDE STORY runs at the 5th Avenue Theatre through 19 June.

Chic Street Man In Concert at INITMAN 3/2/2007
Seen on the Intiman stage in Native Son, for which he performs his original score live during each performance, Chic Street Man plays his signature acoustic bluesy ballads, funky rhythms and jazzy upbeat original in a special concert performance. Locally, Chic Street Man has appeared at Seattle Repertory Theatre in Spunk (for which he wrote the music), It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues (which he helped develop) and, most recently, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, in which he played the role of "Slow Drag." He has also performed in numerous productions across the country, many of which he wrote.
Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story 2/22/2007
ArtsWest presents this dramatic musical about two of the most infamous murderers of the 20th century. Winner of a Drama Desk Award this year, Thrill Me recounts the chilling tale of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two men who killed a young boy in 1924 because they wanted to prove they were capable of committing the perfect crime. Playwright and composer Stephen Dolginoff, as Nathan Leopold, goes beyond the journalistic story reported at the time to vividly capture the unscrupulous obsession between these men as it descended from mutual sexual attraction into a dangerous criminal fixation. On the Boards is a 27-year-old contemporary performing arts organization located in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. It is one of Seattle's often overlooked gems. In 1986, On the Boards was featured in 21 Voices, a NEA-sponsored book spotlighting 21 outstanding arts organizations, including the Lincoln Center. A 1988 feature article in Esquire Magazine named On the Boards one of the Ten Most Interesting Theaters in the U.S. Since opening a new facility in 1998, On the Boards now presents approximately 200 performances a year in two theaters; a 350 to 500 seat "Mainstage Theater" and an intimate 100-seat Studio Theater, both equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf gets new life in this innovative adaptation. Allison Gregory and two-time Emmy Award-winning composer Hummie Mann created this slapstick celebration of character and music. Seattle Repertory Theatre's CATHAY: 3 Tales of China 9/12/2005
Cathay: three tales of China is a theatrical triptych that weaves together stories from far-flung eras of China's past and present. It mixes over 140 puppets, many built in China, with high tech and digital production. Conceived, written and directed by the internationally acclaimed Ping Chong, this Seattle Rep’s production was commissioned by the Kennedy Center. Made in collaboration with the Shaanxi Folk Art Theater of Xian China, the show features rod and shadow puppets operated by Chinese artists and members of the Carter Family Marionettes from Seattle. The Making of Princesses 8/12/2005
Princesses is a musical stage production that premiered at the 5th Avenue Theatre before moving to Broadway. Creating this show began with an idea by Director David Zippel who contacted stage writers Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, known for their work on TV's CHEERS. Composer and pop music producer Matthew Wilder worked with Zippel's lyrics to create a hip new musical that tells the tale of The Little Princess, a classic children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Seattle Asian Art Museum Presents Grand Kabuki Performers 7/8/2005
Nakamura Ganjiro III, Living National Treasure and founder of the Chikamatsu-za troupe, discusses his five decades as a Kabuki actor. The Grand Kabuki tradition is introduced by Professors Paul Atkins (University of Washington) and Laurence Kominz (Portland State University). A member of the company is then transformed with makeup and costume into a female character.
Northwest Puppet Center Carter Family Marionettes 5/6/2005
The Northwest Puppet Center presents performances by the Carter Family Marionettes and other artists. They have studied and performed in Romania, Sicily and China. In the European puppet tradition, the Carters span three generations, and are known for their mastery of Sicilian marionette theater, Opera dei Pupi. The Northwest Puppet Center’s performance season is from October through May, and offers children’s programs that won’t drive adults from the room. Once a year they perform a marionette opera with professional singers and chamber orchestra.
