Seattle City Light: Electricity Theft 4/6/2012 It`s estimated City Light loses $3 million a year from stolen power. That is cost that must be picked up from other rate payers. Seattle Fire Department has fought fires due to power theft, and there have been deaths in other cities because of meter tampering.
Power theft is a crime and is being prosecuted by the King County Prosecutors Office. City Light is also levying penalty fees of up to $500 against those found to be stealing power, in addition to fees for damaged equipment and the costs of repairing altered wiring service. |

Press Conference: Low Snowpack Means Smaller Power Supply 3/4/2010 The mild winter the Pacific Northwest is now experiencing thanks to the El Nino weather pattern will have consequences for Seattle City Light and its customers throughout 2010. City Light depends on snowpack to provide the water that powers the hydroelectric dams that produce its low-cost electricity. Snowpack effectively serves as a "battery," storing some of the dams` power source for use in the summer and fall. A warmer- and dryer-than-normal winter means less snow and a smaller supply of electricity throughout the year. Seattle City Light Special Report-Summer 2007 9/7/2007 Winter storms caused a huge gravel blockage on the Skagit River causing concerns of less efficient hydropower generation and potential flooding in the small town of Diablo. In a spectacular event, City Light released millions of gallons of water from its reservoir to help push the gravel on down river. Also in this edition, fish biologists are experimenting with a device called a "beaver deceiver" to help salmon migrate past beaver dams. We also watch as a herd of goats revisit an overgrown substation and a bird expert coordinates with City Light to visit osprey nests in the lower Duwamish River. |
