Fremont Bridge Closed to Vehicle Traffic for Three Nights in December
Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross the bridge, but should expect delays (Seattle) - The Fremont Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from December 12 to 14, from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. The overnight closures are needed to rebuild the bridge approaches, which are the raised roadways at each end of the bridge. During the day on Monday, December 11, Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) contractors will set nine girders on the southwest (Queen Anne) approach. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, December 12 and 13, the contractor will install pre-cast sections of a water quality vault under the north (Fremont) approach. The water quality vault is approximately 60 feet long and 15 feet wide, and will capture storm water running off the bridge. On Thursday night, December 14, the contractor will set girders on the northwest approach. The overnight work scheduled for December 12, 13 and 14 requires crane crews to lift the vault and girders from the traffic lanes. SDOT must close these lanes to maintain public safety while the materials are lifted into place. The work is scheduled at night to reduce traffic impacts. SDOT will continue to allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross the bridge during these closures. Cyclists and pedestrians, however, will have to wait up to 15 minutes while materials are hoisted overhead. The work will not impact marine traffic. Additional bridge closures are scheduled again for January 2007 for additional girder-setting. SDOT expects to complete approach work in spring 2007, at which time SDOT will reopen all lanes over the Fremont Bridge to traffic. SDOT, however, will need to close the bridge periodically in 2007 to complete mechanical and electrical work. The Seattle Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates Seattle's $8 billion transportation infrastructure. To further Mayor Nickels’ goal to get Seattle moving, the department manages short- and long-term investments in streets, bridges, pavement and trees, that better connect the city with the region. |
