COUNCIL ESTABLISHES OVERSIGHT TO THORTON CREEK Citizens now have a formal role in city action regarding Thornton Creek
SEATTLE – Citizens who love and labor for Thornton Creek will now have a formal role in city action. A resolution, passed in Council today, established an Oversight Council under the direction of Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to discuss and implement an Action Agenda of Thornton Creek Watershed issues.
“This resolution is the fruit of 7 years of planning and discussions,” said Councilmember Jim Compton, Chair of the Utilities and Technology Committee. “SPU began watershed planning in 1997 and this is a terrific day to see an appointed community-based Watershed Management Committee go into action.”
The Thornton Creek Watershed Action Plan was drafted in May 2001; the Action Agenda was complete in July 2003.
Today’s resolution formally recognizes the contributions of the Thornton Creek Watershed Management Committee, which developed the watershed plan. Membership to the Council will be broad-based and include representatives from both Seattle and Shoreline appointed by Director of SPU. New members are currently being solicited.
Thornton Creek Watershed: drains 7,120 acres, 11.6 square miles and is largest watershed in City. It includes 15 miles of open stream channel, two main forks, north and south branch and numerous tributaries plus 300 acres of parks and open space; 75,000 residents live in it. Mouth is at Matthews Beach.
Projects include Meadowbrook Pond, Jackson Park detention, Pinehurst Natural Drainage System (planning stage), Northgate Water Quality Channel.
