Woodland Park Zoo's acclaimed animal conservation programs are at work in communities around the globe. One of the zoo's signature efforts focuses on the endangered tree kangaroos of Papua New Guinea. Reporter Penny LeGate made the 6,700-mile journey to the remote island north of Australia to get a first-hand look at conservation efforts in the lush and unforgiving landscape of the Huon Peninsula. For LeGate, the opportunity to see one of the elusive animals up close in the wild was a sight few get to see. Another personal experience will forever link her to the island, its warm-hearted people, and a new baby tree kangaroo.
